Studio Exploration
Over the past few weeks I have been adding and creating more movements and motifs to my solo, it is currently around four and a half minutes and I have attached a video to show my progress and where I am currently at with my solo: https://youtu.be/iN-unmo9Ph8
The section I have been working on, I am utilising a t-shirt as a prop and this helps portray the storyline, as the t-shirt is used as a sail to redirect and move the stranded boat, in the hope that the men would be rescued. When performing this section in front of my teacher and peers, I got great feedback on the use of resistance with the t-shirt and the imagery of the sail was well perceived and clear to see.
In the video I have attached I am performing the second section of my solo, you can see that I repeat the movements without the sail, I wanted this to demonstrate the idea of losing hope and faith as well as not knowing what to do. I hope over the next few weeks as my choreography starts to piece and come together more, my characterisation also improves and I can tell a story with the movements and motifs I’ve created. See Figure 1 to see how I have utilised the t-shirt to create the sail like movements and angular shapes in my piece:
Repetition is a common theme in this section, as I wanted to demonstrate how repetitive and hard the eleven days got and I found using this motif throughout this piece helped me portray this as well as experiment how to incorporate different levels, directions and speeds. The use of these differences also displays how their emotions and wellbeing would change throughout these eleven days and as each day went by, they would lose even more hope of ever being rescued.
I have found using the studio I will be performing my solo in very useful and insightful as it allows me to see how much I need to travel as well as fill the space, as even though in the piece I am stranded and trapped, the rest of the space in the studio conveys the thoughts and feelings with the emotional side and telling a story with the help of the diary entry from the stranded men I will be referencing in this piece.
