A Reflection of my Choreographic Process so Far

In my independent choreography I currently have five minutes which I am really happy with as this allows me to be on track with my choreography as well as gives me the opportunity to clean and ensure timing on the sections I have already created. The two sections I have been working on at the moment is the t-shirt section, where I use a prop to symbolise the sail. The second section I have created is to show the process of the sail being lost but also the emotional side of losing hope and wanting to give up, I use a lot of spiral and swaying movements to represent the waves and more dynamic movements to show the crashing of the waves as well.

I feel as though the process so far has met the requirements for the criteria and I am continuing to work on these so my solo is the best it can possibly and I am able to challenge myself with the use of choreographic devices, creative processes and different motifs as well as movements. I want to continue working on this and applying any feedback I have received from my teacher and peers to ensure the story and emotion comes across to the audience.

The first criteria I feel I have met is to: demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a key choreographer including stylistic and interpretative qualities within their work and historical context and I have done this with my research into my chosen practitioner Alexandra Whitley, using his choreographic process as well as movement qualities as inspiration for my solo. The second criteria I feel I have met is: critically review received knowledge, evaluate arguments, and formulate an independent view in both written and oral submissions. I feel I have met this requirement as in my feedback from my teacher and peers I have been able to ask as well as answer questions about my choreography and apply this to my written work. The third requirement is: be able to realise a solo performance from a range of sources, which is what I am still working towards as I am still creating and adapting my solo.

I have received some really positive feedback about my solo as well as some things to consider and work on, when performing the t-shirt section, my peers liked the repeating movement with and without to show the idea of losing hope as well as the use of levels and resistance with the use of the prop, but moving forward it might be beneficial to use a bigger prop so my movement isn’t limited or restricted.

I also got some feedback on the music, they really liked the second track as it showed sympathy and helped portray the idea of waves and being at sea and they also enjoyed the first track but because it is such a dramatic piece of music and it constantly builds, my movements and dynamics need to match the music and not allow the music to control the movements.

I  feel all this feedback is really useful and allows me to improve and work on sections over the next few weeks as well as creating new sections and hopefully soon getting towards the end of my solo piece.
